Law Week kicks off today! It's the biggest week on the legal calendar, and there is plenty of FREE events, webinars and activities online. The Law Week theme is 'Unlocking the Law' and that has certainly happened. It's been fantastic to see how organisations have adapted to what’s occurred and produced engaging ways to provide information people need at this time. 

The events and activities cover a broad range of topics, everything from family law and tenancy to employment and parenting, even an inquest into the death of Prince! You can check out the full Victoria Law Foundation program here and the State Library of NSW calendar here. 

We also have a Law Week 2020 page on our HRCLS website which includes an information sheet, Staying Safe as a Senior. This pulls together resources and information on Elder Abuse, including how to identify the different types of abuse, how to react and respond, and tips on how to keep safe in common situations our elderly find themselves in at this time of their lives.

It's also National Volunteer Week and we thank all our amazing "vols" for their contributions to our service. They make a huge difference and help us ensure as many people as possible who deserve free legal advice get access to justice.

HRCLS has implemented changes to how we provide legal services. The aim is to protect the health and safety of our staff, clients and the community. We help solve legal problems

As a generalist free community legal service, we provide assistance on a range of legal issues, including:

·       family law

·       family violence

·       separation and divorce

·       youth law

·       motor vehicle accidents

·       credit and debt issues

·       consumer complaints

·       fines

·       other everyday legal problems

Some legal problems, like bankruptcy, conveyancing, personal injury, and commercial matters, we are unable to assit with, but if you call us, we can refer you to someone who can help. We prioritise people experiencing family violence, children and youth, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people with a disability or mental illness, the elderly, low income earners, and people from non-English speaking backgrounds.

Legal Aid NSW is continuing to provide legal services to new and existing clients  including advice, assistance and representation in all legal matters. These services are being provided by phone and other electronic means as the doors are closed to the public. Weekly advice appointments are available for crime, family and civil law matters. Appointments and enquiries can be made by calling the Albury Legal Aid office on 6020 7200.

COVID-19 - The NSW Government, in partnership with Legal Aid NSW and Law Access NSW, has launched a FREE legal help service for people facing legal issues under the COVID-19 public health laws. More information is available here. People needing legal help related to COVID-19 can access the service by calling 1300 888 529 between 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, or by visiting www.lawaccess.nsw.gov.au. The Albury Legal Aid Office can also be contacted on 6020 7200 for telephone advice.
